Winter Is On Its Way – Is Your Pride & Joy Prepared?
With the smell of freshly cut grass fading & leaves beginning to fall, there is no doubt shorter days & colder weather are on the horizon. Though lots of us like to push through & ignore the cold for those country drives, without a doubt some will be thinking, “Is it time to put the car away for winter?”
Whether you’re an organised guru or a club member keeping the spirit of summer alive, Reep Group have got their technical wizards together & made a “how to” list to keep your car stored safely this winter. If, by chance, you wish to keep to the roads, our guys have put together some tips for you bravehearts too!
Preparing For Winter
Regardless of age, our cars are an integral part of our lives & family. Whether they are transporting us to family on Boxing Day, or taking us on a spirited drive amongst the autumn leaves. Its great practice that we protect them against the winter elements. With this in mind, we would recommend 1 of 3 “last stage” protections.
These can applied by any club member to their vehicle. It’s key to remember that natural waxes are only as durable as the surface they are applied to. With this in mind, make sure you thoroughly wash, clay bar & polish the exterior paint work of your vehicle. The cleaner the surface is from contaminants, the longer your wax will last.
The new age of covalently bonding, ultra-durable nano-coatings is here! It’s a bit of a mouthful, but trust us, it works! This clever paint protection tends to have a hard 9H top & softer 7H base layer. What does this mean? we hear you ask. Well this means it’s exceptionally resistant against swirl marks & chemicals. Making protection against road grime, road salt & organic elements a doddle to remove. It also has the benefit of lasting up to 7 years! The downside, this is strictly a professional application. So make sure you contact your detailer for more information on preparation & application.
-Paint Protection Film
The ultimate in paint protection! If you’re looking to save your car from stone chips & road rash this winter. Then this is the ultimate choice in automotive protection. A high gloss, virtually invisible film. This wizardry is digitally cut on a plotter to the exact measurements required for your vehicle. Once installed, it creates a self-healing advanced water resistant barrier that will protect against stone chips & road rash. Making sure your perfect paint stays that way underneath its new protective partner.
Let Sleeping Bears Lay to Rest
For those who are meticulous & only crave the roads of spring & summer, here are our tips to stay dry & safe this winter.
Home garage can be just fine to store your vehicle this winter. If you don’t have a home garage, look for a storage facility that has concrete floors. The facility does not need to be climate controlled but should not have excessive moisture.
Check Engine Oil
If the dip stick’s dirty & you’ve reached the mileage limit, change before storage. This can also be completed before the spring season. However, if you are storing up to 12 months, it’s worth changing. Modern synthetic oils are stable for approx. 1 year from new. So if this is the case, it might be worth changing.
Washing Your Vehicle
Always make sure your vehicle is fully decontaminated. This can be completed by adding degreasing/snowfoam/clay bar system to your standard washing regime. Making sure no surface contaminants stay with your car during its time in storage.
Top Up Fluids
It’s always worth going for one last drive. Make sure all the water has removed itself from the crevices & to keep the fuel in the tank at a minimum. You can choose to fill the tank up with fuel. But if you do, make sure a fuel stabilizer has been added to the tank & has had enough time to flow through the fuel. This is always a great time to check other fluid levels, especially anti-freeze.
It’s always a great idea to make sure your tyres are inflated to their maximum PSI rating. This will prevent the tyres from developing flat spots over the winter months. It is not a necessity to remove your tyres & is not advised to put a car on blocks or axel stands. Leaving the suspension hanging for an extended period of time.
Make sure your windows are rolled down an inch to allow air circulation & prevent moisture from building inside the cockpit.
It is essential to not let your battery go flat over winter. We recommend purchasing a trickle/maintainer from a brand such as CTEK (ctek.com) We appreciate batteries in modern cars need to be connected at all time for their computers memory. So make sure you place a clean microfiber across the wing. This will stop the issue of the cable scratching the paint on your vehicle’s wing.
Your vehicle can look like a mighty cosy spot in the winter to our friends of nature. But it can also cause some serious damage to vehicle wires & interiors. Make sure intakes & exhausts are covered with steel wool balls to keep those pesky neighbours out.
A cover in a non-heated storage facility can be essential over winter. The idea is to keep the car dry & protected from air born debris. As well as dust & other foreign object following the laws of gravity from the ceiling/wooden frames. Make sure you select a cover that fits snug around the car, allowing it to stay dry, but breathe over the winter months. We find “Specialised Covers” have always made a fantastic job of fabricating perfect vehicle covers. So well worth a look to find the perfect cover (specialisedcovers.com)
Leave It Be
We know it can be very tempting to get the car back out, on a sunny winters day. But this can be a tricky idea. Letting the car just simply idle, is actually detrimental. Condensation can potentially build through various systems & not properly burn off. If it’s getting started, make sure it’s for a “proper” drive. But if you decide this remember, you will be going through this entire process again. Choose wisely friends!

Wax or Sealant?
As there are now many different options available on the market these days for paint protection, what is actually the best one you can choose for your vehicle?
The Reep Group is home to some of the world’s luxury car care brands, producing some of the best surface protectants available on the market today. From wax protection, through Swissvax, or a Ceramic Sealant from Gtechniq we have your vehicle covered. Literally.
More commonly known and used on the market, wax is the easiest protectant to apply to your beloved car and can be done by the owner themself. Swissvax have spent a lot of time, money and effort in researching and perfecting one of the world’s finest wax ranges.
7 out of the 15 waxes in the range have been developed alongside manufacturers including Porsche, Rolls-Royce, BMW, Ferrari, and Mercedes, to make sure that it truly brings out the very best in the paint, and thoroughly protects it. As it bonds with the paintwork, the result has been developed to produce a deep, glossy shine that will shimmer and shine no matter what the lighting!
A more modern, scientific take on Paint Protection are paint sealants. Both Koch Chemie and Gtechniq offer paint sealant solutions, with Gtechniq’s Crystal Serum offering over 7 years of protection with the correct care and maintenance!
A paint sealant forms a harder bond with the paint, thus providing a higher level of protection. A paint sealant can help to defend your paintwork against:
- Very minor abrasions
- Road grime, grit and salt
- UV protection
Once a paint sealant has been applied to the surface, it is impossible to remove it easily, as the bond is so strong. Both Nano and Ceramic paint sealant’s are made up of tiny particles that sink into the pores of the paint to form a protective shield. The ceramic finish does exactly that – forms a hard, ceramic finish onto the paint.
The downside? These solutions will commonly cost more than a wax protection, and a paint sealant can only be applied by a fully trained professional that has been shown the correct techniques and application processes.
The deciding factor?
It ultimately comes down to preference and cost. A wax protection is the ideal solution for anyone who loves to be hands-on, and for any Concours entrant due to the wide variety available. Either of the above will produce the ‘Lotus leaf effect’ that is desired by any car enthusiast. They will have water and dirt simply beading away from the surface, thus making cleaning far easier!
All of the above is available through The Reep Group of companies. Whether you’re looking to protect your vehicle using a wax or a sealant, all of our locations in Scotland, North Yorkshire, the North West, the South East and the Midlands are Swissvax Authorised and Gtechniq Authorised. Quoting the either the Supercar Driver Club, Porsche Club GB or Ferrari Owners' Club discount code will entitle you to 20% discount off all work carried out by any of the Reep Detailing centres, the home of Luxury Car Care. Protect your pride and joy before it’s too late!

Myles Collins joins returning Westbourne team for 2017 Renault UK Clio Cup
Rapid saloon car racer Myles Collins (Harrogate) has announced he will contest 2017’s Renault UK Clio Cup, with the returning Westbourne Motorsport team.
Collins was previously a front-running name in Westbourne-run cars in both the Citroen Saxo and Ginetta Junior categories.
He then moved to the Northern Saloon and Sportscars grid, often winning his class in front-wheel-drive machinery, but has not raced for the past 18 months.
The 22-year-old commented: “I always wanted to be on the UK Clio Cup grid so have spent my time away getting everything ready to achieve that. Re-joining Westbourne, which has a very strong track record in the championship, is the logical choice.
“The longer-term ambition is touring cars and the UK Clio Cup obviously the place to be for a driver to prepare for that.”
Indeed all 18 races on the UK Clio Cup calendar take place at the British Touring Car Championship’s high profile events. The category has an unrivalled reputation for producing future top-class BTCC talent. By racing alongside the BTCC, it is also assured huge trackside crowds (average 38,000+ in 2016) as well as live free-to-air TV coverage on the ITV4 channel.
The 2017 season starts at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent (Sat 1/Sun 2 April) and will also include rounds at Collins’s home circuit of Croft, North Yorkshire in mid-June.
Westbourne Team Principal Richard Colburn said: “We rate Myles very highly – he came on really well under tutelage from our driver instructor Ed Pead (himself a past top name in the UK Clio Cup) with lots of natural pace. It’s great to be teaming up with him again for our return into the UK Clio Cup after effectively two years away.
“We hope to announce at least two more drivers in the near future. This is a very serious bid by us and we’re coming back determined to add to the wins we’ve previously racked up and, who knows, maybe even a push for the title.”
Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager Will Fewkes added: “We very much welcome Myles onto our grid for 2017 – he adds to the very exciting young talent the UK Clio Cup keeps attracting as the natural ‘feeder series’ to the BTCC. It’s also great to see Westbourne back – they are a very professionally-run outfit and have come close to winning the title before. I’ve no doubt they will be quickly pushing for podium results and race wins.”

When we spoke to Chris and his team about what they are doing, we didn’t hesitate. We have seen the rise and rise of Reep Group in their chosen markets and feel that this new business will take us into another league in terms of our overall offering.

Our vision for the future is clear – we are aiming to become Best in Class in the world of Vehicle Detailing and Enhancement and have massive aspirations in the Paint Protection Film marketplace which has enormous potential too – we want to be the supplier and partner of choice in the Midlands and this is the first major step towards achieving that ambition”.
